Are Search Engines An Online Traffic Monopoly?

On recently on Digial Point, a post was made about the search engines being no more then huge online traffic monopolies.  When you sit back and think about it, one could easily say that they do have a monopoly on the overall internet traffic picture.  Yes there are other means of advertising on the internet without using the search engines.  Some of those methods are:

  • Link/Banner ads on other websites
  • Directories
  • Ebay/Craigs List
  • Article writing & article submissions
  • Blogging and guest blogging
  • Forum Postings
  • Email marketing
  • Write for other people’s newsletters

 Now I understand that some of these methods do not bring hardly any traffic at all, in all seriousness how many of you look in directories for products or services?  Yea I thought so, you go to a search engine.  That brings to me to my answer really, yes the search engines are an online traffic monopoly.  Just about everyone knows how to search on them, the results are fast and in most cases are what the viewer was looking for.  In today’s day and age people want there answer and they want it now.  The faster they can get it, the happier they are.  That is why a lot of people turn to the search engines when looking for things, they are the champions of generating traffic on the internet.

Are Meta Tags That Over Rated?

SEO General 2 Comments »

Years ago what you put in your meta tags would make or break or search engine ranking. Search engine marketers would emphasize heavily on what was said in the meta tags, because it played a big role on where the site ranked. You would find websites that had more text in there <head> tag then they did on the front page of the website. Imagine over 15 lines of meta tag’s being used on each page. Now a days though all of those meta tags are useless and a waste of space. There are a few meta tags that I still recommend everyone to use and I will go further into that in a bit. First let’s take a look at some meta tags that you will find by these “meta tag generators” that I would not bother using.

<META HTTP-EQUIV=”refresh” CONTENT=”10″>
This tag would refresh the page after 10 seconds. Never use the refresh meta tag. There is no reason why you should be refreshing the page unless you are looking to redirect the user to another part of your website or a different domain name. Even then this is not the recommended way of accomplishing that.

<META NAME=”Expires” CONTENT=”never”>
This tells the search engine spider/robot when the page will expire or be out of date.

<META NAME=”Classification” CONTENT=” “>
This meta tag would be used to classify your webpage for a directory or if the search engine breaks down a site to categorize it.

<META NAME=”Author” CONTENT=” “>
This meta tag specifies who the author is. To me this is just a waste of space and I have seen clients who have using keywords here that had no effect.

<META NAME=”Subject” CONTENT=” “>
This would be the subject of the webpage, and then again you have a title for the webpage I hope so just use that.

<META NAME=”Copyright” CONTENT=”© “>
Copyright notice would go here.

<META NAME=”rating” content=”general”>
This meta tag is used to give your website a rating for your audience. You could manipulate this tag by having an adult site or gambling site and still set it to general. Yea I can see how this will help you, use the backspace key and save yourself the time of even typing this one out.

<META NAME=”Revisit-After” CONTENT=”XX Days”>
On new clients websites I still come across this tag quite a bit. Why would you want to tell the search engine spider/robot to only come back after XX amount of days? Hell why would they even want to listen to you? If you set this number to say 45 days and each day you add new content the search engine wouldn’t come back until after the 45 days are up? You have got to be kidding me! Highlight the entire meta tag and use the delete key in the upper right hand corner, thank you.

Misc. Meta Tags

<META NAME=”ROBOTS” CONTENT=”NOODP”>
This will make sure that your title or description from DMOZ will not be used on the SERP’s.

<META NAME=”ROBOTS” CONTENT=”NOYDIR”>

<META NAME=”Slurp” CONTENT=”NOYDIR”>

This tag will make sure that your Yahoo directory title or description will not be used on the SERP’s.

<META NAME=”Robots” content=”all”>
You can use this meta tag if you are not comfortable or just do not want to create and use a robots.txt file. Here you can specify to the search engine spider/robot what pages or directories you do not want them to crawl and index.

So What Tags To Use?

<META NAME=”Description” CONTENT=” “>
Using the description tag is a must in my opinion. Google and other search engines sometimes use this tag when displaying your website on the SERP’s. The description tag should be different for each webpage you create, keeping the same description tag on every page is not an effective way for SEO on your website. Whatever keywords or keyword phrases you are going for on that specific page, you will want to word your description tag around them as well.

<META NAME=”Keywords” CONTENT=” “>
There are search engines out there that ignore this meta tag (Google being one). However there are smaller search engines that still use this tag to help index your website so why not take the extra minute to use this one. I am sure others will argue and say why not take the minute and use one listed above. Also it has been shown that not using this meta tag will not hurt your SERP’s with some of the major engines. This one is up in the air to use or not, I still use them on my client’s websites. You will want to have created different keyword meta tags for each page as well but do not spam your keywords or key phrases in this tag.

Those are really the only two tags you should use at all times. I know using the Keyword tag is not needed for certain search engines however since it is used for others I say use it, but do not abuse it. The end result is you are always looking for a slight advantage over your competition to boost your website on the SERP’s. Meta tags are not as important as they used to be, so if you come across a company that is offering there SEO services and focuses heavily on altering your meta tags and how important they are just walk away. Those companies have no clue what they are talking about and just want whatever money they can get from you and that is it. They are just like the companies who will submit your website to 1,000’s of search engines for a fee. I will talk about that however in another post.

I Am Back From Vacation

Personal Comments Off

After a much needed 3 week vacation, (first one in 2.5 yrs.) I am now back to work and doing my best to get caught up. I let all my client know I would be away, however I did not mention here on my blog for it is so new and hell I don’t know how many of you even read it yet. I am confident though that in due time I will have readers here to share my opinion’s or dispute them. I say dispute because I speak my mind on any topic, I don’t sugar coat or kiss ass per say when people ask me for my opinion on a subject. So let the updates start rolling in as I have a lot to talk about now that I am back full time.

Can Rank Checking Software Hurt Your Results?

SEO General Comments Off

I had this brought to my attention the other day and I just can’t believe this statement to be true. When you use your favorite rank checking software to hit the search engines to see where you rank for your keywords, it can hurt your rankings. With all the request’s to the search engine to check each one of your keywords and its position is abuse on there system. The search engines in return will penalize your site for the automated checking process and not actually “clicking” on the link. I thought for a few seconds, and then said to myself what a load of crap! The only thing I can see happening is the search engine banning your IP after excessive queries in a short period of time. I am not sure if this is true and if so how long they would ban your IP for or how many queries it would take in XXXX amount of time to get a ban.

Seriously though, if using rank checking software actually did hurt your website and it’s results don’t you think for a split second the competition would be hitting the top sites on a daily basis? There are companies over sea’s who sit on dial up accounts all day long, logging on and off while clicking on sponsored listings to waste there money (click fraud). I would think then those same companies would offer a similar service using a rank checker to slam the top ranked sites and get paid for it. That is just to easy to do and that is why I believe checking your rank on the search engines for your keywords will not hurt your listing results and is just down right bogus.

Overture Keyword Tool Is Dead People

Misc. 2 Comments »

In the past month I have become fond of the digitalpoint forum, it is a good place for information. Yes I know there are plenty of other places, just a post there made me write this here. To this day I still people asking and referring to and using the overture keyword tool. It has not been updated since January, making it 6 months old now. Why are you still using data results that are 6 months old? When it was being updated on a monthly basis, it was a very accurate and great tool to use. Now though it is a complete waste, so people please move on to other tools and quit referring still to the overture tool. The following are still free to use:

Wordtracker (they have a free version)

SEOBook Keyword Suggestion

Keyword Discovery

Digital Point Tools

There are other websites out there that you will see list overture results. Write that number down, then go to the overture tool that you used swear up and down by and you will see the numbers match up. So don’t get to excited when you see websites listing overture results, they are just pulling the data from the old keyword tool.

There are other ones out there

Using Flash Navigation Menus

SEO General 1 Comment »

Yes using flash technology on a website can look great. However if used in the wrong manner it actually does more harm then good. For instance, you have a an awesome flash header created for your website. Roll over effects, clean animation, sound effects (mute button please don’t forget!), all the bells and whistles to make it look nice. Yet you have your entire website navigation built into it as well. The buttons may look nice and have the roll over effects you were looking for. However it is a terrible idea for any SEO you plan on doing for your website. First of all what if the viewer does not have flash installed on there computer? I hate to say it, but it happens still to this day. Secondly, even though the search engines have come a long way they still cannot read the links embedded in your flash. So when they go to crawl your website, they will not spider the rest of your website. Another thing to keep in mind is people who use IE will have to click on the flash first to just activate it, then click on it again to go anywhere. If you insist on using flash though for your navigation, please make sure you include a footer that has links to the rest of your site so the search engines can crawl your site properly. Another alternative is to create a CSS menu, you can still make some nice roll over effects, incorporate images for the roll over, drop down menu’s etc. and still be search engine friendly. Making your website easy for the viewer to navigate through is very important, don’t forget that.

Buying/Selling Links

Misc. Comments Off

Should you buy links from other sites to boost your PR or traffic? This has been going on for a while now, sites with higher PR have been selling spots on there website just like selling banner advertisements. It is a great way to boost your PR really, I wouldn’t expect a ton of traffic from doing this. There have been cases though of getting on a high profile website that can generate sales for you. However do not expect this with all of the links. Google say’s they will be cracking down on the bought links as they do not pertain to what the viewer really wants to see. If you are purchasing links for the purpose of increasing your PR, then buy from sites that are in the same niche as you and that do not advertise that these are the “paid links section”. I have seen websites that sell links, but the heading reads “Paid advertisers” or “Paid links” which will not look good to the Googlebot.

So what about buying all these directory listings? Will those be punishable now since it really doesn’t pertain to my website and really is nothing more then a link farm? How about paying for a site review from a well known blog? That link will not only help your PR but probably give you a nice boost in traffic and a few more subscribers to your RSS feed. It is a bought link though, so is that punishable by Google to? They are currently the giants on the internet so they can flex there muscles and do this unfortunately.

Mahalo The New Search Engine In Town?

Industry News Comments Off

Ok so I see Mahalo.com is the creation of Jason Calacanis, who is well known in the industry. He has come up with the concept of having a human edited search engine. I understand it is still in a very early development stage “Alpha”, but please tell me how this will be better then other search engines? It is uses people to edit the listings and who the results in order. It isn’t a search engine, it’s a mix between a directory and search engine. Lets call it a SEARECTORY! I personally do not see this going very far at all. The DMOZ project was a human edited directory that turned out to be one big load of crap. Submit your website, and wait an eternity for an editor to review it. Well now we have this so called search engine that is human edited for better results. Currently there are no advanced search features, you can only see what the editors put into the system and the results can be manipulated by the editors at any time.

Mahalo will have to hire a lot of employee’s to keep this site running and up to date on the latest search trends. Which will cost a good amount of money to keep going. I don’t think Jason is looking to take over as the new Google or Yahoo but give viewers another means of finding quick answer to there question. Good luck on the endeavor Jason, I support the effort and hope the service is a success for you.

Adsense Account Banning Is Like Can Spam Act

Industry News Comments Off

June 1st the death of Google Arbitrage?

Do any of you buy into this? Yea I thought so, neither do I. Here is the thing, there are sites out there that are specifically made for Google adsense (MFA Sites). I believe Google is trying to find ways to basically shut these sites down. The MFA sites are bad for the publisher’s who are paying for the advertising and Google is trying to weed these out of there system. I have not received an email in regards to my account being shut down. It reminds me of the “Can Spam Act” that was put into law years ago to try and stop email spam. Yea ok that worked out real well. Basically you can still send out emails to “Opt-in” subscribers, on a legitimate network, not hiding your IP, using a real from address, (keep in mind a legit network, real from address = greater chance of the email being delivered) offering a removal option and displaying your contact information in the email. In my opinion it is just a way for them to keep tabs on who is bulking and who isn’t. It took the bulk emailer’s who were using out of country proxy’s, smtp relay’s or setting up servers in china to mail through DNS. For the most part it did shut down some of the spam, but it sure as hell didn’t stop it. Companies saw the profits that could still be made, the price of email leads went even higher and companies continued to buy them from the bulkers.

Now Google is shutting down accounts in hopes to clean up the content for its advertisers. I believe it is just there way of doing a little summer cleaning and trying to push the little people out of the business of trying to make money through adsense arbitrage. It’s the same thing the Can Spam Act did, just cleaned up the email spammer’s and put the little people out of business. The big players will still be there, the ones that spend a lot of money on adwords in return make a lot of money on adsense. With accounts being shut down/banned this opens the doors for others to take over and profit more with Google arbitrage. Less competition can make for higher profits if the correct niche is found. Yes I know its always that way, but with thousands of people now banned you can find it without as much competition.

I do not feel this will be the end all for Google arbitrage, its impossible to stop it. Your taking a business practice that has been around for centuries and trying to stop it? Buy a keyword for $0.10 and sell the traffic you hope it generates for a higher profit. Ok, buy a piece of property for $20,000 and sell it for $35,000 a month later if you can. Does that mean your going to get banned for trying to make a profit? Yea I didn’t think so, the concept is still there for Google arbitrage, just the way you go about doing is going to change a little bit.

H2-H6 Tags Better To Use Then H1 In Google

SEO General Comments Off

A recent study by Sistrix (site is in german) states that using the H2-H6 headline tags showed better results then the H1 tags in the Google SERP’s. Maybe Google has seen the heavy use of H1 tags and feels that the actual page content is more important then the headline itself. Just another curveball thrown at us, however one discovery I find very interesting since I was unaware of it. So for future SEO of your sites, keep in mind that the H2-H6 tags have greater weight then the H1 tag.
